Surf Park Óbidos promises to transform surfing in Portugal with an experience accessible to all.
Portugal is preparing to take a significant leap forward in surfing tourism with the creation of Surf Park Óbidos, a project promoted by Surfers Cove and co-financed by COMPETE 2030. This innovative project will bring together, in a single space, a state-of-the-art artificial wave pool, tourist accommodation and multiple sports and leisure activities, creating a unique experience for both surfers and families.
Democratising access to surfing with cutting-edge technology
“Surfers Cove – Surf Park Óbidos was created with the ambition of democratising access to surfing and providing authentic, memorable and safe experiences for surfers of all levels. With Wavegarden technology, the world leader in artificial waves, it will be the first surf park of its kind in Portugal, capable of generating more than 25 types of waves — and up to 1,000 waves per hour — allowing each surfer to develop their potential. This project complements the ocean: it offers a controlled environment for learning, evolving and training to surf consistently, developing more prepared, confident surfers who are connected to the sea,” says Manuel Maria Vasconcelos, CEO of Surfers Cove.
A strategic destination between Peniche, Nazaré and Óbidos
Located between Peniche and Nazaré — two of the world’s most iconic surfing destinations — and very close to the medieval village of Óbidos, Surf Park Óbidos aims to be a 4-star tourist resort, with modern bungalows, an exclusive swimming pool for guests and a wide range of services. From padel courts and skate and bike tracks to areas for yoga, events, conferences or themed parties, the space is designed to attract both national and international visitors.
Surfing all year round for all levels
The main attraction will, of course, be the artificial wave pool, which will allow surfing at any time of the year. From beginners to high-level athletes, everyone will be able to enjoy a controlled environment to learn, improve or train. ‘Our vision is clear: to be the best Surf Experience in Europe,’ emphasises Manuel Maria Vasconcelos.
Leisure, gastronomy and integrated accommodation
In addition to surfing, there will also be a specialised school, shop, bar and restaurant with a terrace overlooking the pool. The project is strongly committed to an inclusive approach that values sport, hospitality and contact with nature, also integrating wooden accommodation units developed by the Portuguese company Carmo Wood.
The essential role of COMPETE 2030
‘The support of COMPETE 2030 was decisive in enabling the private investors’ initiative, allowing investment in cutting-edge Wavegarden technology, in the development of complementary sports activities to support surfing, as well as in the construction of the main building and the wooden accommodation units developed by Carmo Wood,’ adds the official.
A project with national and regional impact
With this operation, Portugal becomes one of the first ten countries in the world to host an artificial surf park of this nature. “This is an innovative and structuring tourism project for Portugal, positioning the country at the forefront of surfing, active leisure and sustainable hospitality. At the same time, it will make a concrete contribution to the economic revitalisation of the Central Region, promoting quality tourism, job creation and the enhancement of the territory,” concludes Manuel Maria Vasconcelos.
Surf Park Óbidos promises to become a landmark in national tourism, where surfing intersects with innovation, leisure and regional development.
