On 7 February 2025, the German Design Awards ceremony took place at Messe Frankfurt, a celebration of the most outstanding achievements in the field of design in various disciplines. The event brought together more than 1,300 guests from the worlds of design, business and culture, emphasising the fundamental role of design in promoting innovation and social transformation.

One of the central themes of this year’s edition was circular design, with a focus on sustainable and responsible approaches within the design industry. The new ‘Circular Design’ category honoured projects that exemplify innovative solutions aligned with the principles of the circular economy.

During the ceremony, several Portuguese companies were honoured for their outstanding contribution to design.

Indelague, a recognised Portuguese manufacturer of lighting solutions, won two awards in the ‘Excellent Product Design’ category for its SONA and GOMO luminaires. SONA is a modular acoustic lighting solution made from 100% recyclable PET panels, designed to improve both the visual and acoustic comfort of spaces. GOMO is a customisable suspended luminaire, assembled without the use of screws or glue, which stands out for its sustainability and versatility. Melinda Ramani, the designer responsible for the projects, received the awards on behalf of Indelague.

The company was supported by COMPETE 2020 as part of the ‘INDELAGUE exports more’ project, which enabled it to strengthen its international presence through organisational and marketing innovation, thus increasing its export base and capacity for new foreign markets.

Mesa Ceramics was also honoured with two German Design Awards 2025, in the ‘Excellent Product Design’ category, for its AKIKO and KAZE collections. These distinctions confirm the company’s ability to innovate and raise standards in the design of ceramic stoneware products, positioning itself as a leader in the sector. The KAZE collection is inspired by the serenity of natural elements, while the AKIKO collection reflects a sophisticated and contemporary approach to tableware.

Mesa Ceramics was also co-financed by COMPETE 2020, through a project that enabled the creation of a new factory dedicated to the production of tableware and dinnerware in ceramic stoneware, positioning itself as a benchmark for innovation and quality in the sector.

JNF – Architectural Hardware was honoured with a German Design Award for three exclusive handles developed in collaboration with renowned designer Ross Lovegrove. These pieces were praised for their innovative shapes and high quality of execution, helping to redefine the boundaries of contemporary design.

These awards highlight Portugal’s growing international profile in the design sector, underlining the commitment of Portuguese companies to innovation, sustainability and creative excellence.

The 2025 edition of the German Design Awards not only honoured outstanding achievements in design, but also reinforced the industry’s commitment to sustainability, innovation and the transformative power of design in responding to global challenges.
